It's more of a display of dedication and hard work....something most American kids lack these days. Which is why you see this competition being highly composed of Asian kids in recent years.

Spelling random words nobody has ever used in real life might be dumb...but there is nothing wrong with watching young kids set goals and try to achieve them.
